Nursing workforce

Is Nursing a good course to study in Nigeria in 2026?

High current employer demand
Yes — Nursing currently has a strong job-demand signal. In September 2026, public listings showed many nursing openings across hospitals, clinics, schools, HMOs and other employers. The wider Medical/Healthcare job field also grew 5.9% from 2024 to 2025 in the published MyJobMag benchmark. That 5.9% is for the wider field, not Nursing alone. Our own Nursing-only percentage increase should only be published after the dated vacancy corpus has been fully deduplicated.

What is Nursing really like as a course?

A Nursing degree is not just classroom science. You will spend a large part of your training learning patient care, clinical procedures and how to work safely with real patients.

Nursing is the course for people who want to care for patients and work as healthcare professionals. You learn how the body works, how to care for sick people, how to give treatment safely, how to monitor patients and how to work with doctors and other health workers.

What jobs can you get with Nursing in Nigeria?

Start with the jobs people actually hire nurses to do, then look at the specialties you may grow into.

The most obvious path is Registered Nurse. But Nursing can take you into many areas: hospital nursing, maternity, paediatrics, theatre, ICU, dialysis, emergency care, community health, occupational health, school nursing, home care, HMO work, health education and some healthcare management roles.

Are nurses in demand in Nigeria right now?

Here is what our September 2026 public-listing evidence says — and what it does not say.

As of September 2026, our public-listing scan shows strong Nursing activity. HotNigerianJobs displayed 224 listings under Nursing / Nursing Science, while its Registered Nurse role page also showed 50 active results. Our analysis uses these findings to map current recruitment activity and career pathways. We also found current examples from Lagos, Abuja, Oyo, Rivers and other states. The wider Medical/Healthcare field grew 5.9% from 2024 to 2025 in the published benchmark. That tells you healthcare hiring was growing; it does not prove Nursing itself grew exactly 5.9%.

How much do nurses earn in Nigeria?

Salary changes with employer, location, specialty, shifts and experience. We show advertised figures, not promises.

Current public adverts show a wide range. Examples we found include about ₦120k–₦160k for some Registered Nurse roles, around ₦150k–₦200k for some hospital roles, and much higher pay for senior or specialist nursing jobs. Do not treat one salary as the normal Nursing salary. Your pay depends on employer, location, experience, specialty, shifts and whether you work in Nigeria or abroad.

How much does it cost to study Nursing in Nigeria?

The tuition is only one part of the bill. Think about clinical and living costs too.

There is no single Nursing fee. A university BNSc comes with school fees plus accommodation, feeding, books, uniforms, clinical materials, transport and other costs. College of Nursing routes have different fees and structures. Before accepting admission, check the school fee, hostel cost, clinical charges and other compulsory payments.

What are the JAMB and O’Level requirements for Nursing?

Admission rules differ by university, so check the exact programme before you choose your school.

For a university Nursing programme, check the exact JAMB/UTME and O’Level requirements for the school you want. For example, the University of Ibadan lists English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics among its O’Level requirements for Nursing and English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology for UTME. Requirements can differ by institution, so use JAMB IBASS and the university’s current admission page before applying.

What subjects do Nursing students study?

Expect medical sciences, nursing practice and a serious amount of clinical training.

Expect subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health, mental health, community health, nutrition, research and nursing practice. You will also spend a lot of time on clinical training. Nursing is not a course where you only sit in class.

What skills do you need to become a good nurse?

The job needs more than good grades. Clinical judgement, communication and calmness matter.

Learn patient care, communication, clinical documentation, observation, teamwork, critical thinking and safe clinical practice. Basic digital skills also matter because healthcare employers increasingly use electronic records and other digital systems. BLS/ACLS can help for some roles, especially after you have built the core qualification and registration.

Do nurses need professional registration in Nigeria?

Yes. Registration is part of the route from Nursing student to practising nurse.

Professional registration is a major part of Nursing. You need to complete the required training and registration process with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria before practising as a nurse. Specialist nursing areas can require extra training. Overseas practice has a separate registration process.

How do you get Nursing experience before graduation?

Your clinical postings are not just another school requirement. Treat them as the beginning of your professional experience.

Your clinical posting is your first serious work experience. Take it seriously. Build good relationships with supervisors, keep evidence of what you have learned, and start watching employers before final year. Some current vacancies ask for experience, so your clinical exposure matters.

Where can Nursing students find internships and graduate training?

Start looking before final year. Early exposure can make the transition into work much easier.

Look for nursing internships, clinical placements, hospital attachments, NYSC placements and graduate openings. Current September 2026 listings include nursing internship opportunities, so do not wait until graduation before you start looking.

How does NYSC fit into a Nursing career?

Use your service year strategically: learn, build contacts and leave with useful experience.

NYSC can become an important bridge into your first job. When possible, target a placement where you can learn, work with experienced nurses and build useful contacts. Keep your CV and professional documents ready before your service year ends.

What scholarships are available for Nursing students?

Funding changes by year, so check the current eligibility and deadline rather than relying on an old list.

Scholarships do exist for Nursing. Government schemes, universities, foundations and special programmes can support students. For example, the Federal Government announced a scholarship stream covering Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy in public universities for the 2025–2026 cycle. Always check the current eligibility, deadline and approved schools before applying.

Should you do a postgraduate Nursing degree?

Postgraduate study makes more sense when you know the area you want to deepen or the role you want next.

You can continue into areas such as maternal and child health, mental health and psychiatric nursing, medical/surgical nursing, nursing education, nursing administration and other specialist paths. University of Ibadan currently lists M.Sc., PGD and PhD-level Nursing options and several nursing specialisations.

Can Nigerian nurses work abroad?

Nursing travels well, but every destination has its own registration and immigration rules.

Nursing is one of the Nigerian health professions with strong international mobility. But your Nigerian qualification does not automatically give you a foreign licence. You normally need qualification assessment, professional registration, language requirements and other checks in the country you want to work in.

What should you do from Year 1 to graduation?

The best time to prepare for the work is before final year. Your plan should match the kind of Nursing career you want, not just the calendar.

Year 1

Focus on your science and nursing foundations • Start tracking scholarships • Learn basic digital and communication skills

Year 2

Take clinical training seriously • Start building your professional network • Learn how different nursing specialties work

Year 3

Look for practical exposure and internship routes • Keep a simple record of your clinical experience • Start preparing your professional CV

Final year

Complete your academic and professional requirements • Prepare for registration and NYSC • Track graduate and entry-level nursing jobs

Before you choose Nursing

Do not make the decision from one salary figure or one job-board count. Look at the work, the market evidence, the training, the professional requirements, where the jobs are and what you are willing to build during university.
